Description

Gameplay: Boss Rummy

The game can have 2, 3, or 4 players. If there are only two players, they each get 10 cards; if there are three or four players, then each player gets 7 cards. After the cards are dealt, the deck is put face down on the table, and one card is placed face up next to it to start the discard pile. The player to the left of the dealer starts the hand, and gameplay goes as follows:

Boss Rummy

  1. Start your turn by drawing a card from either the deck or the discard pile.
  2. If possible, lay down a hand on the table. You are allowed to put down many melds in each round (in some versions only one meld per turn is allowed).
  3. Lay off cards on existing melds. For example, if there’s one on the table and you have the other, you may lay it off on the pile. Who put the meld down in the first place doesn’t matter; as soon as a meld is on the table, it doesn’t belong to anyone anymore. Anyone can use it. You are allowed to lay off as many cards as you want, and you may always lay off, also when you haven’t put down a meld in the round.
  4. End your turn by discarding one card onto the discard pile. If you drew from the discard pile, you cannot discard that card in the same round. If you only have one card left to discard, you put it face down on the discard pile and win the game.

The game continues like this until one player has finished all the cards from their hand. A player is not required to end the game by discarding a card onto the discard pile; if he can lay down all his cards in melds or lay them off on existing melds, he may do so and will win the game.

If the deck is depleted before a player has won, then the discard pile is shuffled and used as a new deck. If the deck is depleted for a second time, then the hand is considered a stalemate and finishes with no one getting any points.

Scoring

The scoring in Boss Rummy is winner-take-all. When a player has won a round, the cards his opponents still have in their hands are counted, and the winner gets points based on them. Face cards are worth 40 points each; aces are worth 1 point; and other cards are worth their rank, e.g., an 8 is worth 8 points. The points for all the losers are added together and given to the winner. (In some variations each player gets his points as penalty points, but not in this version). The score needed to win the entire game varies based on how many players there are. For 2 players the score is 100 points, for 3 players it’s 150 points, and for four players the score is 400. When a player reaches the target score, he has won the entire game. Since scoring is based on cards left in hand, it makes sense to try to meld and lay off as early as possible.Boss Rummy

Going Rummy (Boss Rummy)

If a player has not melded or laid off any cards during the game but can get rid of all his cards in one turn and earns a bonus, his points are doubled! This is called Boss Rummy and is a risky move since you have a lot of cards for a long time, but it can really pay off if you manage to do it successfully!

Stalemate: There are two cases where the game can end in a stalemate. One, as mentioned above, is when the stock has been depleted twice. The other is when the game detects that none of the players will be able to finish their hands. This can, for example, happen when all players have only one card left, and there are no possible lay-offs of the melds on the table. When there’s a stalemate all players get 0 points, and the game is considered a loss for all of them in the statistics. The way people handle this in real life varies greatly, but I’ve chosen this simple method here to avoid complications around two or more players having the same number of points, etc.

Boss Rummy Rules

Boss Rummy is similar to the standard Boss Rummy, the only difference being the number of cards dealt: a set of 10 is dealt to each player.

It is a game of 2-6 players. For 2 players, 2 decks of cards are used. For more than 2 players, the game makes use of 3 decks. Each player gets 13 cards in the beginning, which they have to meld into valid sequences and/or sets. 5, 6, and 7 of the same suit is an example of a sequence or run, and 7, 7, and 7 of different suits is a set.[3]

It is a draw-and-discard-based game, wherein each player picks a card from the open pile or the closed deck upon their turn and discards a card to the open pile. Boss Rummy also makes use of joker cards. These cards can be used as substitutes for any card to form combinations.

Each card holds specific points. Number cards carry points equal to their face value. Face cards, namely Jacks, Queens, Kings, and Aces, hold 10 points each. Jokers are worth zero points. As players meld their cards, their point score decreases. The player who achieves zero points first of all wins the game.

The player who forms valid runs and/or sets before all other players is the winner. The rules of the game say that there must be at least two runs, and one of them must be pure, i.e., it does not contain any jokers. To exemplify, 8, 9, and 10 of the same suit of cards are a pure run, while 8, 9, and the joker are an impure run. Players can meld their remaining cards into either sets or runs.

Each player picks a card from the closed/open deck and discards a card to the open deck. The gameplay goes on in an anticlockwise manner until the winner completes the required sets & sequences. The basic 13-card strategy is to make valid sequences and sets before one’s opponents.

Once either player discards a card in the discard stack face down [citation needed], the game will end. The players need to arrange the cards and then place them on the table to show their hands to other players. If the player’s hand meets the objective, they are declared the winner. If not, all opponents [which ones?] are declared winners, and the player who ended the game is declared the loser.

At the conclusion of the hand, the unmade points held by the losing players are added up. Scoring is generally rounded off to the nearest five (for example, 62 points becomes 90). If the hand value of a losing player exceeds 70, a score of 70 is entered (for example, 81 points would be counted as 70)

The three most popular Cherry Rummy variants that follow a similar pattern of play, based on the draw and discard of cards, are the following:

  • Boss Rummy: Games in which the monetary value associated with each point is preset at the beginning. The player who finishes first wins the amount as the sum of points of all opponents x the monetary value of 1 point. It is the most basic and quickest version of Boss Rummy. New players find it easier to learn and play
  • King Rummy: Games in which the number of deals (game rounds) is preset at the beginning. The player with the minimum points at the end of all the deals is the winner of the game. Generally, the number of deals is 2 or 3. It is similar to playing Boss Rummy a fixed number of times. Hence, it takes longer to finish a deal in a rummy game.
  • Hi Rummy: Games in which the upper limit (102/204) for the points is preset at the beginning. The player who remains till the end, after all the other players have been eliminated on crossing the preset limit, is the winner. It is the longest format of Boss Rummy. It is similar to playing Hi-Lo Rummy again and again till all the players, except one, collect 101/201 points and have to exit the game.

Boss Rummy

Boss Rummy has been declared by the courts of law to be a game of skill or mere skill. Such games are excluded from the applicability of laws prohibiting betting and gambling (‘Betting and Gambling’ being a state subject under the Constitution of India) in all states, with the exception of a few. However, the states of Assam and Orissa have not provided clear rulings on this matter and are thus ambiguous territories. Playing Boss Rummy online is also legal in India.[4]

Boss Rummy is legally recognized as a game of skill in India. In the landmark judgment State of Andhra Pradesh v. K. Satyanarayana (1977), the Supreme Court ruled that rummy is “mainly and preponderantly a game of skill” and not pure chance, exempting it from gambling prohibitions under laws like the Public Gambling Act, 1967. [5]

This legal distinction has been upheld in subsequent rulings. For instance, the Madras High Court allowed online Boss Rummy and poker, recognizing them as games of skill. Similarly, the Kerala High Court struck down a state-imposed ban on online Boss Rummy, affirming its legality.

However, the legal status of online boss rummy varies across Indian states. States like Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have enacted laws banning online boss rummy for stakes, citing concerns over addiction and financial loss. These state-specific laws have been challenged in courts, leading to ongoing legal developments.

In most parts of India, playing Boss Rummy for real money is considered legal, provided it does not amount to gambling under applicable state laws.
