On the first turn of the round, the non-dealer has the first option of taking the upcard on the discard pile or passing. If the non-dealer takes the upcard, they must then discard a different card to the discard pile. The player acting second can take the top card from the pile of their choice. However, if the non-dealer passes the upcard, the dealer is given the opportunity to take the upcard or pass. If the dealer also passes, the non-dealer must draw from the stockpile, and then the next turn and after, players can draw from the pile of their choice.
On each subsequent turn, a player must draw either the (face-up) top card of the discard pile or the (face-down) top card from the stock pile and discard one card from their hand onto the discard pile. If a player chooses to draw a face-up card (from the discard pile), the discarded card cannot be the just-drawn card.
Players alternate taking turns until one player ends the round by declaring the hand over (knocking), or until only two cards remain in the stock pile, in which case the round ends in a draw and no points are awarded. The game ends when a player reaches 109 or more points (or another established amount). In tournament rules the game is played in a best of five with 270 points per game.

The Rummy is similar to the Hi Rummy, the only difference being the number of cards dealt: a set of 13 cards is dealt to each player.
It is a game of 2-6 players. For 2 players, 2 decks of cards are used. For more than 2 players, the game makes use of 3 decks. Each player gets 13 cards in the beginning, which they have to meld into valid sequences and/or sets. 5, 6, and 7 of the same suit is an example of a sequence or run, and 7, 7, and 7 of different suits is a set.[3]
It is a draw-and-discard-based game, wherein each player picks a card from the open pile or the closed deck upon their turn and discards a card to the open pile. The Rummy also makes use of joker cards. These cards can be used as substitutes for any card to form combinations.
Each card holds specific points. Number cards carry points equal to their face value. Face cards, namely Jacks, Queens, Kings, and Aces, hold 10 points each. Jokers are worth zero points. As players meld their cards, their point score decreases. The player who achieves zero points first of all wins the game.
The player who forms valid runs and/or sets before all other players is the winner. The rules of the game say that there must be at least two runs, and one of them must be pure, i.e., it does not contain any joker. To exemplify, 8, 9, and 10 of the same suit of cards are a pure run, while 8, 9, and the joker are an impure run. Players can meld their remaining cards into either sets or runs.
Each player picks a card from the closed/open deck and discards a card to the open deck. The gameplay goes on in an anti-clockwise manner until the winner completes the required sets & sequences. The basic 13-card strategy is to make valid sequences and sets before one’s opponents.
Once either player discards a card in the discard stack face down [citation needed], the game will end. The players need to arrange the cards and then place them on the table to show their hands to other players. If the player’s hand meets the objective, they are declared the winner. If not, all opponents [which ones?] are declared winners, and the player who ended the game will be declared the loser.
At the conclusion of the hand, the unmade points held by the losing players are added up. Scoring is generally rounded off to the nearest five (for example, 52 points becomes 50). If the hand value of a losing player exceeds 70, a score of 70 is entered (for example, 81 points would be counted as 70)

Declare Dead aThe rummy
When a player can neither meld nor lay off when it comes to their turn, they have to declare “dead.” The game still goes on for the rest of the players, but the player participates no further in the rest of that game.[1][2]
The effect is that the player can no longer reduce deadwood in their hand and is therefore stuck with all the points in the dead hand. Even subsequently, when there are new melds that the player could have been able to lay off more cards on, they cannot do so because they are out of the game. So it is desirable to delay declaring “dead” as much as possible. In other words, players try very hard to keep their hand alive.[1]
It is not unusual to see a player laying off a 3-of-a-kind of aces in their hand one by one if there is already another existing set of aces on the table. This helps to keep the hand alive for 3 more rounds. It is also a common strategy not to meld if one does not have to. Melding helps to keep other players alive, which is not desirable for oneself.
A type of “dead” declaration is failing to get a “passport” right from the beginning. In other words, the player does not even get a chance to play in that game round.[1]

The Rummy is usually played in ‘rubbers.’ One rubber consists of several individual games. Before a game begins, each player contributes five chips to the pot (pot or pull). Players who have already accumulated over 86 but not yet 103 negative points may ‘buy themselves back’ into the pot by contributing an additional five chips and reducing their bad point scores to that of the second worst player still in play. However, a player may only buy back once during the game.[2]
